I can log into KDE just fine and failsafe gnome, I also can get to a
command line termainal with ctrl-alt-f1-f6
I am using debian(sarge) with gnome 2.8 packaged with debian.
Here is my hardware
FIC AU13 Motherboard with onboard nVIDIA sound 6 channel, network and
the basics.
Radeon 9600 256MB video card
200gig Harddrive
20gig Harddrive
DVD-RW
CD-RW
768MB Memory
550W CoolMax Powersupply

Probably your X server. Tell us more about your hardware (ideally an lspci
output would be nice). Also does the ctr-alt-backspace combo still work ? What
about the ctr-alt-F[1-6] to drop you back in the shell ?
