*sigh*  This is what you get for posting before having a sane dose of
caffeine. I stand corrected. Having a close look at my HDD LED tells me,
it isn't accessed every few seconds. I should have known better. Sorry
for the noise.

No, i had this issue (accessing the hd every five seconds), and got it
resolved. Try googling it, but certainly not ignoring. For example,
you can add noatime to the mount options in fstab. Sometimes the UID
and GID of / are wrong, try chmodding / to root.root
