Changing icons in gnome

hi all;

I am running gnome 2.10 in Debian Unstable. I can chnage the icon from
gnome-theme-manager. where does the chnages takes place.. i mean in
which file or folder?.

previously in gnome 2.8. if i point Default in /usr/share/icons to
some icon folder name it wokrs.. but pointing ( symlink) is not
working in gnome 2.10.
