I'm not running the latest gnomes - but in the older version
that comes from Sun, additional error messages can frequently be
found in $HOME/.dt/errorlog , $HOME/.dt/startlog , and
$HOME/.dt/sessionlogs/ in a `hostfile`_DISPLAY=:0 file.

You might check these types of files, or whatever the new
equivalent might be, to see if additional information about the
problem is being output.
