Gnome Panel Via Command-Line

Is there a way to remove or add a panel item via command-line?  I am
making kiosk setup and with the addition of the lockdown features I feel
I can look at gnome again but I need to be able to customize the panel
to add icons via a script.  Any ideas?  Thanks.
