Gnome Desktop problem

I just installed Debian for the first time in a year, but am having problems 
with the Gnome Desktop.  KDE functions correctly, but gnome will not let me 
use the desktop, as in i cannot drag/drop files or folders to it, right and 
left clicking does nothing, actually, it seems that the only thing that I can 
do is change the background color and click the mouse wheel to get a menu.  It 
does not work for a user or for root.

Any ideas?
