Gnome background stalls

Hi,

I'm having problems with gnome background. Every now and then the 
background "disappears" / stalls and leaves me with a complete black 
background where I can't even right-click with my mouse.

I've tried killing processes, restarting gnome, restarting the machine, 
etc. but nothing solves it.

I'm running Gnome 2.6.2 on Gentoo Linux.

Is there anyone who knows how to solve it?
