Search for a particular file?

How do you search a file in linux searching subfolders recursively?

I don't where the files is so i will start at / - directory.... how do i do 
that?

It seems "ls -R" doesn't do it for me.. i tried to test it.. i made a file 
and a 4th-sublevel directory...
when i issued ls -R filename on the /-directory.. ls didn't see it...
