Jow can I control the size & placement of a Gnome app on startup?

Given that I'm not running a Gnome compliant window maanger, how can I
control the size and placement of a Gnome app (say Gnotepad, or Gedit) on
when starting it up from .xinitrc?

It would be nice to be able to make it come up as an Icon alos.
