I don't think so.
I have a need to view polytonic greek on the web - and while the current
XFree fonts do fill that need, they do so in a, shall we say, less than
pretty fashion. So I bought Palatino Linotype (ttf).

It's in my ~/.fonts directory (as in not being served from xfs) - and it
is usable by mozilla. So fontconfig/Xft does seem to be working ...
