Panel applet debugging again

I'm still unable to debug my GNOME 2 panel applets. The method suggested 
earlier on this list is

1. Start the applet executable from the command line or debugger.
2. Add the applet via the usual right-click menu selection

I'm assuming the idea is that the menu selection will in this case attach 
the existing process to the panel rather than actually starting the 
applet. However, when I try it I get an error popup stating that there was 
a problem loading the applet, with

Unknown CORBA exception id: 'IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0'

given as details.

What is wrong?
