Log out from Gnome

Hello everybody,
a real naive question: shouldn't it be better if the button on the lower
panel that permit logging out from gnome makes a "soft" logout, instead
of the "hard" one that it now does, that is it's like if every
application crashes every time you use it (for example the next time you
open galeon it complains about a crash last time you used it, evolution
doesn't expunge the messages from the trash, and so on), or it is really
not possible to have this due to non-gnome-related limitations?
