Maybe this isn't quite the answer you're after but you can set the
background from the command line with these two commands,

gconftool-2 --type=string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_options wallpaper

gconftool-2 --type=string --set /desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename /full/path/to/image.jpg

in the first command you can substitute wallpaper for centered, scaled,
stretched. Maybe you could use this in the script instead of
imagemagick?
