New windows get focus under metacity

This looks like it is something that should be in a FaQ, as I've seen a
few posts on various sites asking the question, but no reply.

How do you stop pop up windows getting the focus under metacity? There
appears to be no option to configure this, however if you are using an
application such as TkRat, then you can lose your window focus half way
through typing every time somebody sends you a mail. This is annoying to
the point of making metacity unusable, which is a pitty as the rest of
it is seems better than other window managers.
