gnome settings

I use fvwm2 to run gnome applications.  I use gnome-settings-daemon to
keep my settings from session to session on a laptop.

When I run the daemon, it insists on placing a color scheme on my root
window, obliterating the display of xphoon.  In my fvwm init script I
run xphoon after the daemon but the gnome background comes up slowly,
after xphoon.

How do I keep the daemon from using its background?
