lock screen

gnome 2.0 beta 3 Solaris 8
I can't get lock screen to work. Having put the lock screen button on the
panel,
when I try to define its properties, gnome complains that xscreensaver & 
xscreensaver-demo are running as different users (root & nobody).
I would be grateful for any pointers.
