mplayer and menu panel

In my gnome environment (debian unstable, so basically 2.2.0 packages),
the most recent cvs mplayer seems to work (at least mostly) with
metacity and fullscreen (much better than older versions).  However, it
doesn't cover the "menu panel", though it covers all the other panels
fine.

Is there a way to solve this somewhat annoying problem.
