Newbie question: sound volume

Hi list,

Here is an easy question someone must know the answer to: How do I 
adjust the volume in GNOME?! I'm looking in vain for a preference 
somewhere that does this. I've just upgraded some of the components on 
my machine, so it's possible that the correct preferences dialog box is 
simply no longer appearing on my menus.
