compilation woes

do the gnome control-centre and print components etc have any special 
requirements for autoconf/automake by any chance? i am getting a lot of 
"library unknown" errors for libraries i just compiled and ran ldconfig to.

Gnome really needs to have a much easier installation procedure when it comes 
to compilation from scratch... the guidelines dont even have the correct 
compilation order, which is totally unintuitive... and im sure half those 
essential dependencies arent even needed... are they? and if they are.....
