unable to install gnome-libs-1.4.1.7

Sorry for writing again, but I didn't find any other help in the net and 
I don't know where to ask.
Please help me because I dont't have a rpb-based System, so I have to 
compile gnome from source.

When I try to compile the library i get following errormessage:

./.libs/libgtkxmhtml.so: undefined reference to `XpmFreeXpmImage'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

I don't know what that means. I also tried other versions of gnome-libs
but they didn't work, too  (they don't find the db-1.85 because I
compiled the 4.0.14 version with the --enable-compat185 option).
The CVS gnome-libs don't compile too. It says:

Running ./configure --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-compile-warnings

I know that has to do with the aclocal but I dont't know what to do. In 
the Readme they say autogen.sh would do all necessary things. But as you 
see it didn't help.
I would be happy if you could help me.
