Look for a file named /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf or /etc/opt/gnome/X11/gdm/gdm.conf, depending on your distribution. This file contains a section [greeter] with a line "Logo=/path/to/some/file.png". You can alter that line to point to another picture (at least png and jpeg formats work).
