If you need a vector drawing package, Sketch is probably your 
best bet.  But if you're willing to do go into the raster world, 
you can't do better than the GIMP.  Check it out at 
http://www.gimp.org/ and see what you think.  In brief, it's the 
open source answer to Photoshop, and is a real killer app.
