Thanks. I was not aware that manger is Metacity, and not Sawfish. I always do install Sawfish, so I thought it just changed the looks :-)

As for overreaction after not being able to set the focus policy the way I've been setting it for the last ten years... An overreaction would have been to go and buy M$ windows :-) I'm not going to do that, of-course, but I might decide to go back to good old fvwm instead. The vast majority of Gnome (or KDE) functionality is wasted on me anyway, and as a comparison with fvwm (with xfm) where I can just start working right away, I need 2+ hours to make sure that all my text files are opened with Emacs (I mean all x.scm, x.lisp, x.el, x.hs, and x.ml)
