2-byte-font problem

I'm runing RH 7.3 with gnome 1.4 and I get error messages with several
fonts in gnome-apps saying "this is a 2-byte-font and may not be
displayed properly" and no preview is shown of the font and they don't
work. Running a non gnome app (ex. sodipodi or a kde-app) under gnome
gives me all the fonts working.
Any idée what's going on and how to get them working properly?
