Why apps don't launch after a while until /restart/ session?

GNOME is great but sometimes xterm icon
and other apps will STOP launching with
mouse clicks....
When I do Ctrl-Alt-Bksp and log back
in (I use gdm)... then all is fine again.
What is getting "corrupted" in GNOME
as time goes on that requires a new session??
