Do you have the freetype2 header files installed too (or in RH like system the
*-devel.*.rpm file, but ur using Slackware :-)

You forgot the "double dash" (i.e. --) for options. So it should be
./configure --enable-ft2 --enable-pangoft2.
I think ./configure --help should list out the supported options.
