I had the same problem, and going back to the previous Debian (Woody or
Sid) versions of xfonts-75dbi and xfonts-100dbi
fixed the problem.

It seems that newer versions on Woody or Sid still have the bugs, so I put
a "HOLD" on the packages to avoid upgrading them.
