Gnome 1.4 characters display as rectangles

Hi,

I am trying to install Gnome 1.4 using the stable source .tar.gz's and
following the instructions on the gnome.org "Downloading source" page,
at http://www.gnome.org/start/installing/index.php3. I renamed the
.gnome*
directories in ~ before starting Gnome. I found that after installation, 
the Gnome menus and widgets displayed characters OK. I then tried to
change
the font in the control-center. Subsequently, characters in Gnome menus 
and widgets are displayed as small rectangles instead of characters. I 
reinstalled Gnome 1.4 (and deleted my ~/.gnome* directories) without
fixing 
this problem. Applications like Netscape, the font selector and the
window 
manager title bar appear to display fonts OK. I would be grateful for
any 
suggestions.
