Evolution Beta 3 odd problem

I tried to send e-mail to a list serv using Evolution's email utility.  I clicked on "Send" and 
received this error message:  

SMTP server mail.earthlink.net does not support authentication type PLAIN.

Is there an authentication type called PLAIN which I can turn off?  I am sending this 
e-mail using an OS2 program.
