Most likely you're using bitmapped fonts instead of TrueType, etc.

Well, you need to be using TrueType or Type1 or other scaled font
types.  You can't do anything about this if you want to continue using
the bitmapped fonts.

Exactly what you need to do to use scaled fonts we can't say without a
lot more information: what version of X are you running?  Are you
running a font server, or not?  What scaled fonts do you have installed?
Etc. etc.
