GNOME terminal emulator

Perhaps someone would answer a couple of questions for me? Thanks in
advance --

In gnome-terminal -> Settings -> Preferences -> General
What does Open IM (input method) do? Can I see it make a difference
somewhere?

In the same menu/tab the Swap Delete/Backspace does not seem to make a
difference. What am I missing?
