icons not working

Dear Gnomes of Gnurich,
I am using Red Hat Linux 7.1 and Gnome .
WHen I first started to use gnome, when I minimised a window it became an
icon on the panel.
Something has happened and now instead of minimising, the windows disappear
permanently when I minimise them.
How do I fix this?
