I wasn't going to say anything, as I'm still with Gnome 1.2, but Mr. 
Eilting describes the exact problem I had that caused this same 
slowness, for example, with Gnotepad+.  It took perhaps 2 minutes to 
start.  When I got my sound module working properly, the slowness went away.
