compiling Evolution

I'm trying to compile evolution but I'm having trouble compiling packages
that it depends on.  gnome-vfs complains that it needs gconf.h, so I try to
compile gconf.  gconf complains about undefined references to
libiconv_open, libiconv_close, and lib_iconv.  So I compile libconv-1.5.1,
but gconf still complains about these undefined references.  What's causing
this?
