What distro? Under some (RH, ie) open /etc/inittab and change the
"id:5:initdefault:" line to "id:3:initdefault:" so it does not start
in X mode (run level 5), but only text mode (run level 3). That way
the "x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon" line is not executed
(which in RH is the responsable of launching XDM, GDM, KDM or whatever
DM you have).
