Gnome locks frequently

I've put up with this problem for awhile.  What happens if Gnome will
lockup on me for no apparent reason.  The only way out of this situation
is to cylce the power on the PC case.

For awhile I thought that I could avoid the problem by logging in
starting Gnome.  This seemed to lower the frequency of the lockups so I
ignored the issue.

Well, I've finally become frustrated enough to seek help.
