Installing Ximian manually

Anyone tried to install Ximian gnome manually (not using the setup
tool). Reason I ask is that the setup tool chokes on my modified
Mandrake 8.0. Only the minimal system works and only if I remove a whole
bunch of stuff I definately do not want to remove. (Like KDE 2.2.2).
What must be installed first for the install to work? Any pointers to
docs in what order to do things?
