I asked this question way back and didn't get an answer, but a lot has
happened since then so I'll try again:
Is there a command line application for GNOME that will simulate the
desktop's "open" operation? In other words, has anyone written a client for
gnome-vfs (or the older gnome_mime calls) that will launch the appropriate
handler for each command line argument, then exit?
