hum, yes, following up myselff.. but I found it (somehow).

During the hunt for pieces of gnome, I upgraded
autoconf to vers. 2.52 and libtool to vers. 1.4.

Afterwards, I couldn't really downgrade anymore without leaving something 
behind and took my retreat to installing all three (autoconf, automake, 
libtool) from distribution-CDs and it works again... hm.
