Ok....  I did get this to work on Solaris 8 - with DB 3.1.17
and:

configure --enable-shared --enable-compat185

Then, I manually linked the header and lib files in /usr/local/lib
and /usr/local/include respectively.

Clearly, something got hosed in DB 3.3.11.
