After compiling gnome-core 1.4.0.2, and starting that version's panel,
I noticed that my window manager performance dropped dramatically.
I am running it on a Solaris 8-based Sun Ultra 10 workstation, using
the CDE window manager (I have to keep using CDE so that I can support
our user base). It's especially bad when changing workspaces; windows
that normally redraw almost instantly now take several seconds. I
was forced to go back to the 1.2.4 panel, which seems to run fine even
with the gnome-core 1.4.0.2 libraries.
By running "truss" on the 1.2.4 and 1.4.0.2 panels, I found that the
new panel has a lot more overhead in terms of tracking window focus
and other such events; it generates a stunning amount of truss output
compared to 1.2.4, which sits there quietly unless the mouse goes into
its area.
Is there a way to disable some of this event tracking? Am I missing
something obvious? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
