changes are not saved

hello,
 I am experiencing some weird problems with the bottom panel in gnome.
Everytime I add a new launcher to the bottom panel the changes are not
there the next time i log in. I have done a recursive chown in my home
dir to make sure that I was the owner of all files. What is the name of
the file the panel settings are saved in? Are ther any obvious reasons
why this is not working?
