setting proxy in nautilas

I am new to gnome and nautilas. Currently running Gnome 1.4 on Solaris.
Having trouble with getting nautilas configured with my web proxy. I
tried
setting through enviroment variable, and through preferences. Gnome
appears
to be inconsistent in that some applications allow you to set proxy
address
in preferences others do not.

Any clues ?
