handspring visor with gnome-pilot?

Has anyone had luck using the gnome-pilot applet(s) to synchronize a visor
with their desktop?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but since the gnome-pilot
applets uses pilot-link, it should work, right?
yet when I tried it, using the USB cradle, I got an "error in protocal"
message.

any ideas on how I can get this working?
