Well said. Although I like gnome, it behaves slow. It shows, when you hit other software on your maschine. Most Gnome-Programs take quite a while, till they show up. Especially programs using components are very slow. (nautilus, evolution, galeon...) They are so slow, I sometimes find them unusable because of this.
(amd 233mhz, 64mb ram) On the other hand, BeOS is very responsive and even plain gtk apps like the rather well written sylpheed email client are very responsive compared to evolution or nautilus...

I think someone at eazle once said that the defaults matter. It is important to have good defaults. And if you´ve got too many options, you can present only a certain part of them like under 
windowmanager => sawfish => Meta => expert...
