shut down monitor

Hello,
 I recently reinstalled redhat 7 on my machine with the latest helix
code. Previous to this i was running mandrake 7.whatever with helix
code. For some reason gnome will not shutdown my monitor any more. It
will blank the screen but not turn it off after the set time. Can anyone
help me figure out what is wrong. I am not very sure how to go about
debugging this problem...
