Oops.  I didn't understand your question.  Actually, I was talking about
running two separate GNOME sessions from separate virtual terminals and
being able to switch between the two without any problems.  That does
appear to work reliabily.

As for your problem, you should certainly be able to run programs in
separate virtual desktops in the same session without any issues.  I
can.  I don't understand how to fix your problem.  Good luck.
