Why do tasklist icons display wrong in 8 bit color?

All the tasklist icons are screwed up in 8 bit color in gnome-core-1.1.90

What causes this? Is it gnome-libs, gdk-pixbuf or gnome-core that's at
fault?

And can anyone suggest a quick fix - my hardware maxes out at 8 bit color :-(
