Cannot reach control center?

Hello people,

   This is my first post to the list, so please bear with me. :)
I tried to download and compile the latest  version of gnome.  Unfortunately 
I ran in to too many errors, so I "copped out" and downloaded all of the 
rpms from gnome.org.

However, I am receiving the following message when launching capplets:
** WARNING **: Unable reach the control-center.
Exiting...

I don't know where to look.  Can someone help me?
