gnumeric 0.53 won't run

I cannot get the latest version of gnumeric to run.  I have compiled
both gnome-print-0.12 and gnumeric-0.53, but whenever I try to run
gnumeric I get a message saying that a suitable default fault cannot be
found.  I do have a fontmap file in /usr/local/share/fonts.
